What is a spurtle?

The spurtle is a unique cooking tool first created and used in Scotland with a long history dating back to the 15th century. The unique shape allows for lump-free and evenly-mixed porridge, batter, soups, and more, greatly improving texture. The spurtle is very versatile in its uses and will quickly become your favorite kitchen tool!
The Porridge Mom™ spurtle is made of non-toxic, sustainably sourced hardwood maple sourced only from sustainable Canadian forests. Each spurtle is handcrafted on a wood lathe. This means it’s safe for you and the environment. Since it’s not made of plastic or metal, it can be used to stir a pot on high heat without melting or scratching the bottom.

We are proud to say that The Porridge Mom™ Spurtle is Canadian made of 100% hardwood maple: non-toxic and sustainably sourced. Sustainability in Canadian forestry means that 100% of the tree is used, seeds are continuously planted, and indigenous communities are supported through employment and community initiatives.
Maple is a top wood choice for kitchen products. It is resistant to splitting or staining, and is naturally anti-bacterial, making it safe for food use. Maple wood kills bad bacteria by absorbing and suffocating it, thereby inhibiting any new growth. Maple has been recognized by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) as an approved wood for use in commercial kitchens.

The Porridge Mom
Denise has been making oats for her family since her two sons arrived home. Her first son was adopted in 2005 and her second was adopted in 2009. Both were two years old and in need of a loving and supportive family. Denise cooked them porridge for breakfast which they gobbled up with milk and banana each morning. Her youngest was quite malnourished and Denise’s warm, healthy porridge was just what he needed. After some time, his hair began to grow thicker, his body got stronger and he became more intelligent. She believes both her boys benefitted from eating oat porridge daily and as a family, they all continue to enjoy porridge oats for breakfast. Denise began to be known as The Porridge Mom in her house and among friends.

The Porridge Mom™ donates 10% of profits to Youth Without Shelter (YWS). YWS is an incredible organization based in Toronto, Canada. They are dedicated to providing shelter and support programs for homeless youth who have nowhere else to turn. They provide support through shelter, mentoring, education, and job searches.
Along with profits donated, Denise and her family donated their time by cooking porridge for them with oats from Oak Manor Organic. She looks forward to giving to this amazing organization every year.
